Allied Health Education Programs

HHCI has hosted students from a variety of allied health education programs and is in the process of formalizing education programs for physical and occupational therapy students, public health students, dental students and veterinary students.  The general objectives are the same as those for the Medical Education Program.

Physical and Occupational Therapy

HHCI has provided the only therapist care in southern Belize through its long term therapist volunteers the past three years.  Therapy students who wish to join the therapist in her work for two -four week experiences are welcome to apply. For more information, please contact the Ivy Fox PT, the therapist currently volunteering long term in Belize: therapyhillside@gmail.com

Public Health

Likewise, HHCI has begun to host master of public health students for variable periods in order to conduct research necessary to complete their degrees.  A ten week disability needs assessment project was completed in the summer of 2006.  That report may be read in the “Useful Links” section of the website.  Similar projects of public health students are welcome, but they must be pre-approved several months in advance by the HHCI Education Committee and the Belize Ministry of Health.  There are a variety of organizations in Toledo through which HHCI collaborates that are conducive to much needed public health projects and research.

Dentistry

HHCI collaborates with Belize Ministry of Health and another nearby mission group to help volunteer dentists provide services in the region.   Please contact us if you are a dentist or hygienist interested in a short or long term mission.

Veterinary Medicine

In the Spring of 2007, HHCI hosted veterinary students to study the impact of animals on human health and to participate in animal control programs and a spay/neuter clinic with the local veterinarian.   Additional opportunities for vet students may also be available.
