Pharmacy Education Overview

medsFourth-year pharmacy students from Drake University, the University of Iowa, and the University of Wisconsin participate in 4-week elective advanced pharmacy practice experiences at Hillside.  Pharmacy students are incorporated into the patient care activities of the clinic and the mobile clinic visits.  Students also work in the clinic pharmacy, assisting with developing medication-related policies, inventory management, educating patients on appropriate use of medications, and dispensing medications to patients.  Students may be also be asked to prepare community health presentations.  This is an interdisciplinary primary care experience, with pharmacy students working alongside medical, nursing, physician assistant and other students also completing elective rotations at the clinic.  The rich multi-cultural patient population will expand students’ knowledge, skills, and attitudes in working with diverse health beliefs and practices.

Each participating university provides an on-site clinical instructor for the first week of each rotation, while the remainder of the rotation is supervised by on-site clinic staff.

Students from Drake, Iowa and Wisconsin must apply for this pharmacy practice experience through their respective experiential education offices.  Upon acceptance, students must also complete the Hillside Clinic student elective application.  The course syllabus will be provided by the student’s respective university.
